About Simmons Seed

Years of putting the right seed in Texas Panhandle soil.

Our Story

Rooted in the
Texas Panhandle

Simmons Seed was founded in 2011 by farmers who understood one simple truth: the right seed makes all the difference. Located at 1401 NW 6th Street in Tulia, Texas — the heart of Swisher County — we've spent over a decade learning this land and what grows best on it.

We specialize exclusively in winter wheat seed because we believe in knowing one crop exceptionally well. Every variety we carry is trialed in local fields before it goes on our shelf. If it doesn't perform for Panhandle farmers, it doesn't make our lineup.

From certified seed sales to custom seed cleaning and treatment, we're a full-service wheat seed operation with one goal: helping Panhandle farmers grow their best crop, season after season.

Research & Genetics

Our commitment to finding the best-performing seed for your operation doesn't end at the shelf. It starts in the field.

Our Philosophy

Seed Science Rooted in Real Farming

At Simmons Seed, we believe the only way to recommend a variety is to actually grow it first. Every product we carry has been trialed in Texas Panhandle conditions before it ever hits our shelves. We source from breeders who share our commitment to performance, then verify those results right here in Swisher County. Our focus is on matching the right genetics to your specific land, climate, and operation — because no two farms are exactly alike.

🌾
Winter Wheat

Our core focus. We carry a complete lineup of hard red winter wheat varieties — from early-maturing varieties suited to late planting, to full-season varieties designed for maximum yield potential. Each is trialed across a range of Panhandle field conditions, including dryland and limited irrigation, before we recommend it to farmers.

🌿
Forage & Sorghum

We carry high-quality forage sorghum, sorghum-sudangrass hybrids, and haygrazer varieties built for the demanding summers of West Texas. These products are evaluated for tonnage, quality, palatability, and drought performance. We prioritize varieties that give cattle and livestock producers the most nutrition per acre.

🌱
Specialty & Niche Varieties

Beyond commodity crops, we track specialty markets and emerging opportunities. From pearl millet for wildlife and forage, to triticale blends for cover and grazing, we source products that expand what's possible for Panhandle operations of all sizes and types.

🐛
Pest & Disease Tolerance

We pay close attention to disease and pest resistance packages when evaluating any variety. Stripe rust, aphid pressure, and soil-borne pathogens are real concerns in our region. We prioritize genetics that hold up when conditions get tough, so you don't have to fight your seed as well as the weather.

💧
Drought Performance

Water is the most precious resource in the Texas Panhandle, and it's getting more scarce. We specifically evaluate varieties under stress conditions — including limited or no irrigation — to identify which genetics can hold yield when rainfall falls short. We share those results with our customers every season.

🗺️
Adaptability & Fit

A variety that wins in Kansas doesn't always win in the Texas Panhandle. We partner with breeders who conduct wide-area performance testing — from the Southern Plains to the Rolling Plains — and then we validate results locally. The goal is always to find varieties that are adapted to your specific zip code, not just the region.

Featured Research

Triticale & Sorghum Research

Triticale — a cross between wheat and rye — has emerged as one of the most versatile crops available to Panhandle producers. We carry both 813 and gunner triticale varieties, which are proving to deliver outstanding forage quality and winter grazing options without the management challenges of traditional rye.

Our forage and grain sorghum work focuses on varieties built for West Texas heat and limited moisture — delivering dependable tonnage and grazing flexibility. We continually evaluate sorghum performance and component varieties based on real West Texas results.
